my feng shui non-negotiables
Whenever I’m working with a client and making changes to their space, my go to question is always…
How does it feel to you?
Because quite honestly, feng shui should never be about a prescribed set of rules that don’t resonate with your personal tastes, your lifestyle, or your culture.
My mom may be the only human I’ve ever known who passionately hated the color green. And, if I insisted that she add green to the Wealth area of her home (which is very on brand for feng shui), she would have hated that space every time she walked into it.
And annoyance or agitation is most definitely not the energy you want to bring to any space.
Feng shui is more about flow and harmony and balance. AND…aligning the energy of your home with the intentions you have for your life. Not about getting tangled in a bunch of rules.
That being said, there are a few feng shui missteps that still keep me up at night.
Here they are 👇
MY TOP 7 FENG SHUI NON-NEGOTIABLES
The clock that can’t tell time
It’s often said that the past and the future are illusions, and that the present moment is all you really have. When you have clocks in your home that aren’t working or aren’t keeping accurate time, it can feel like perpetual retrograde energy that has you revisiting the past once too many times. The door with the no trespassing sign
Every area of your home is associated with an area of your life. When you have a door that is blocked by furniture or belongings, the energy can’t flow into that space. Which means the energy is also blocked around a particular area of your life. The open toilet lid
The ancient feng shui masters will tell you that leaving your toilet lid open is a major energy drain that leads to a depletion of your wealth. I also think it’s an aesthetic black eye, which is why I will most definitely close your toilet lids if I come over for a visit. The dead plant
Plants are living, breathing things that bring so much positive energy into a space. However, when they’re dead with no chance of revival, they drain the energy from the room and signal that the space has been neglected. The abandoned front door
In feng shui, your front door is the mouth of chi. It’s where abundance and opportunities are invited into your home. If your front door is never used, hidden, or hard to spot, the positive energy can’t find you.The blank wall
There are seasons - sometimes whole decades - when we feel invisible. Overlooked at work, unheard at home, unseen by those around us. And often, that feeling has a physical twin: walls that say nothing about who actually lives there. They’re left bare, filled with someone else's taste, or dressed in whatever came pre-framed from the store. The clogged drain
In feng shui, water is associated with both emotions and finances. Which are two things that rank high on my list of things to flow freely! If you want to avoid chemicals, you can try putting baking soda down your drain followed by vinegar and then a teapot of hot water. It’s a great plumbing elixir!
NOW OVER TO YOU
That’s my list, but I’m curious about yours.

Also, leaving a toilet lid open is insanitary. I’m surprised by people who still don’t know to put the lid down BEFORE flushing. Otherwise particles from the toilet water can spread to other areas of your bathroom like your toothbrush. Eww. Anyway, from a sanitary and feng shui perspective, you should keep the toilet lid down.
I also prefer lids down on the toilet. Never considered it not clean. I like to keep everything clean. Still working on my front door. I have many mirrors in my dining room and lots of plants everywhere. Redoing my whole kitchen. Have been dealing with a hand rash of bugs and wondering what part of the house needs clearing?
